Welcome to Waterford West State School — a proud and inclusive learning community in the heart of Logan, where every child is known, valued, and celebrated.
My name is Michael Richards, and I am honoured to serve as Principal of this extraordinary school. Throughout my career, I’ve led schools across Queensland — from remote islands to regional towns and metropolitan communities — but what makes Waterford West truly special is its people. This is a school built on connection, culture, and community.
A School Where Everyone Belongs
With more than 750 students and over 50 cultural backgrounds represented, Waterford West is a place where diversity is not only embraced — it's celebrated. We are particularly proud of our strong connection with our First Nations students, families and community, supported by two Community Education Counsellors who help embed cultural knowledge and build meaningful relationships across our school.
Our belief is simple: when students feel safe, valued, and culturally respected, they thrive. That’s why we work side-by-side with families — because it takes a village to raise a child, and we are that village.
Supporting Every Learner, Every Day
We are proud of the high-quality support that surrounds our students and staff. Our experienced Leadership Team includes:
Three Deputy Principals, supporting student engagement, behaviour, and curriculum leadership across year levels
A Head of Department – Curriculum, leading teaching and learning improvement across the school
A Head of Special Education Services, ensuring every student is included and supported
A Head of Student Services, focusing on student wellbeing, attendance, and behaviour support
To support classroom excellence, we also have a team of four sector-based coaches, providing targeted support in each part of the school:
In addition, each year level has a dedicated Inclusion Teacher, working shoulder-to-shoulder with class teachers to differentiate learning and ensure all students can access and succeed in the curriculum.
A Big School with a Family Heart
At Waterford West, we are committed to creating an environment where students have the right to learn, and teachers have the right to teach. Our expectations are clear, consistent, and grounded in respect — for self, for others, and for learning. We also place a strong emphasis on valuing our staff and investing in their ongoing professional growth.
If you are visiting this page as a prospective family, staff member or stakeholder, we want you to know: you are welcome here. We love our community, and while we may be a large school, it feels like a family. We celebrate our wins together, support each other through challenges, and stay focused on what matters most — helping every child grow in confidence, knowledge, and kindness.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Waterford West. I warmly invite you to connect with us, visit our school, and experience the Waterford West difference.
Warm regards,
Michael Richards
